Some nursing homes are also known as a skilled nursing facilities. Did you know that if you have a medical need with a 3 day qualifying hospital stay within the past 30 days, and a physician who verifies your need for skilled care, Medicare will cover a short term stay at the nursing home? At Winston Medical Center Nursing Home, we provide both long and short term stays. It is a very common assumption that Medicare will pay for long term care. This is not true. Medicare will pay for short term for skilled care which means that the resident had a 3 day qualifying hospital stay and has a skilled need such as physical, occupational, speech therapy or skilled nursing to provide wound care.
Medicare is health insurance for people over the age of 65, long-term care is a type of medical care that many people may need at some point in their lives. However, Medicare does not pay for long-term care but will pay for beneficiaries who require skilled nursing or rehabilitative services up to 100 days, for which that resident qualifies to receive skilled care.
Winston Therapy Services offers Physical, Occupational, and Speech therapy. Our therapists have years of experience working with geriatric patients, and strive to return patients to their optimal functional level. "For the month of September, 100% of our skilled service patients were able to return home after receiving physical and occupational therapy during their skilled stay in long term care facility," stated Melanie Kirk, Director of Winston Therapy Services.
According to Medicare, approximately 43 percent of people over the age of 65 are likely to spend time in a nursing home; of these, 24 percent will be there less than one year. “We are seeing more and more short term skilled stays in the nursing home”, stated Fran Misso, Director of Nurses. “Our residents are coming into the facility and are receiving therapy services and are returning to their homes where they are able to live independently,” stated Misso.
